Accountancy firm

If you already have a business, you need an accountant!

Sounds simple, but is it? Definitely true. In more ways than one. Have we set up our business? Do you want to get your tax affairs in order before you set up your business, following the advice on our starting a business page? Are we unhappy with our current accountant?
These are all questions that the accountancy firm will have the answers to. These are the most common reasons for choosing an accountancy firm.
But we would also like to have the answers to these questions. Perhaps the most difficult question to answer is which accountancy firm is the most appropriate. But how to choose?
We will try to answer this question in a few words. In our answer, we will explain in a few points what are the criteria to look for.
And why? Because choosing a good accountant is a very important question. If an accountancy firm makes a mistake, it can often cost a business owner a lot of money.
It can also be a problem if the accountancy firm of your choice is not available, or is only available after a long period of trying. There are often important questions that need to be answered immediately and cannot be postponed.

There are three, perhaps the most important, questions that need to be answered.

The chosen accounting firm

  • how up-to-date it is
  • whether it carries out its work with precision
  • and how quickly it can be contacted?

We know that finding a good accountant is a difficult task. We know this because we talk to our clients.
It is also worth saying a few words about what many people do not know, or do not know well. A reliable accountancy firm is not a data collection company. It is much more than that! Many companies only understand or realise this when the house is on fire. We love the car example, you could say it's like having a worn brake pad for months but only replacing it when you hit the wall because you can't stop. It costs more and is more painful.

Let's take a quick, point-by-point look at some of the issues you should consider when choosing an accountant:

  • Does the accountant have liability insurance?

Does the accountancy firm have a bookkeeping service provider? If an accountancy firm has liability insurance, the accountant can be held liable for any damage caused. So it is actually in the accountancy firm's interest.

  • What is the accountant's fee?

This is also an important consideration as it is a regular monthly expense. But let's believe in the truth of Hungarian proverbs. Do you know them? Cheap meat for... So don't be sure that the cheapest is the best choice!
For several reasons. It might be cheap because your work isn't really valuable and you've run out of customers. Or it may be cheap because it has a lot of clients, so it is fragmented and cannot devote sufficient time to all its clients.

Finally, here are three more tips to help you choose an accounting firm:

  • Is the firm properly licensed, certified and qualified
  • Does the firm have the necessary qualifications, licences, accreditations, certificates, etc.?
  • Do they have suitably qualified professionals in a range of areas?
  • Do they have appropriate references?
